Brett,

Looks a lot my bike probabllydid.  Seat looks idntentical to my 82 CSR.  I had no tank or front end.  On those used stators if the coppery colored goo around all the windings is pretty much the same color without any burned off or really discolored areas, it should be fine.  Easier to put on in the case cover anyway.  Like George said 50 volts ac accross all possibe combination of the three yellow wiires, solder your connections up through to the regulator/rectifier bypassing those plug in connections.  Just did one on a Honda shadow 85 model so it should be similar.  I use tiny smears of red permatex gasket goop to hold the gasket in place, besides the pins. Check wiring diagrams to be be sure.  Getting 14 volts on the battery with bike running.

I got the used eBay stator and it works fine.

When the bike was running with the replacement stator, the battery was low and there was so much current in the wire going from the rectifier/regulator to the battery that it started to melt/smoke at one of the connector terminals. I think the terminals were acting like a resistor, and thats why it started to melt the wiring there.

So I fully charged the battery and the same wire became warm with the bike running, but not too hot to touch like before. I'm thinking of adding a bypass wire -- one thicker wire soldered directly from the regulator/rectifier to the battery with no terminal connectors.

I'm currently awaiting a new starter clutch, an eBay seat from an 81 LTD that should fit better, and the carb set I sent to wgcarbs for a rebuild.

I'll start a new thread with photos soon.

I "found" my 1977 Z1000A1 (KZ) Imported from the USA wisconsin in 1991.
It was in pretty poor conditio, but fairly rust free.
Very strange lime green florescant paint on nearly everythin,I mean wheels & tank. Huh
I paid out £1000GBP which was quite high, but the motor was good and all the bits were there aprt from a small ltd style tank.
I have posted a pic of what it looks like now.
